What's actually growing in your trash can
The inside of a residential trash bin is one of the dirtiest surfaces on your property. Leftover food residue feeds Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria. In North Carolina summers, a wet can with organic residue can grow visible maggots in as little as 24 hours. Flies lay eggs on any exposed protein and the larvae hatch fast.
A garden hose puts out roughly 40 to 60 PSI. That's enough to rinse the loose stuff on top and nothing else. The biofilm layer, the slimy coating bacteria build to stick to the plastic, needs mechanical agitation from either a stiff scrub brush or pressurized water to actually break loose. That's why a rinse "cleans" the can for about three days before the smell comes back.
What DIY cleaning actually looks like
- Wait until trash day, drag the empty can to the driveway.
- Rinse loose debris with the hose (5 min).
- Fill the bottom with hot water, dish soap, and a splash of bleach.
- Scrub the walls with a brush that has a long handle. Reaching the bottom corners is the hardest part (10 to 20 min).
- Dump the dirty water somewhere it won't run into a storm drain.
- Rinse thoroughly, then flip the can upside down to dry for a few hours so it doesn't mildew.
Realistically that's a 30 to 40 minute chore per can, once a month, for the rest of your life at that address.

Can I just clean my trash can with a garden hose?
A garden hose rinses the surface but doesn't produce enough pressure to remove the baked-on residue, biofilm, and larvae that stick to the ridges inside a bin. You need at least 1,500 to 2,000 PSI to actually clean it. That's pressure washer territory, not hose territory.
Is bleach safe to use in a trash can?
Bleach kills bacteria but doesn't remove the organic gunk feeding it, so the smell comes back within a week. It also damages the plastic over time and is hazardous if it runs into a storm drain. We use a degreasing soap plus pressurized water. No bleach.
How often should I have my trash can professionally cleaned?
